Turtle Dove - 60 Two-Part American Folk Songs Arranged by Kathé E. Lyth; Illustrations by Kjeld E. Lyth; Editors: Anne Laskey and Gail Needleman. 94 pages This collection of 60 American folk song arrangements for children are useful in bringing harmony and musical understanding in American classrooms. Based on well-known folk songs, they are simple and playful. The illustrations, done by Kathé’s husband, Kjeld Lyth, are captivating. Its two-part songs may be used for sight- singing, written dictation, and for detailed practice for performance. While the majority of folk songs in this volume are pentatonic, scales other than pentatonic have been used: Sally Go Round the Sun is in do pentachord; Turtle Dove and Blow, Boys, Blow are examples in the major scale. The minor scale appears in When the Train Comes Along, I Will Give My Love an Apple, The Christ Child’s Lullaby and Hush You Bye. The mixolydian mode is seen in Poor Old Crow and Old Joe Clark. Harmonic dissonances in some of the arrangements provide a challenge, with seconds and sevenths (When I Was a Young Maid, Walk Along John.) The Owl Sings includes over 20 folk songs arranged for two and three voices, as well as some with parts for musical instruments. Ten are 2-part/ eight 3-part, and four arranged with instruments (decoder, bass met allophone, hand percussion, flute, keyboard). "Dog Tick," "By'm Bye," "Frog Went A-Courtin'" and "Grandma Grunts" though not identified as such feel like American Bicinia. These arrangements are equally valuable for teaching or performance. The Sounds of Rounds and Canons Collected and edited by Ruth Boshkoff and Kathy Sorensen, 1997. ISBN; 1-890340-01-4, 76 pages. This is a rich collection of 39 rounds and canons composed over 300 years from 10 countries in 9 languages underscored with IPA pronunciations. Composers old and new range from the great masters Brahms and Schubert to contemporary Sam Adler and Tom Chapin, from before Ravenscroft’s Pammelia (1609) to special for this collection by Don Freund (1997). Musically, the collection comprises major, minor, and these modes – Aeolian, Dorian, Mixolydian. The widest vocal range is an 11th (Dutch - The Wielewaal) and the smallest a 4th (Japanese - Hotaru Koi). Most are 3 and 4-part rounds but there are a few 2-part (Star Light, Hebrew rounds - Adona Olam, the UN Round “Lo Yissa Goy” , in English “Vine and Fig Tree,” Hungarian soldier’s song – “A jó lovas Katonának” ), a 5-part (“Pourquoi Chanter”), a 6-part (Sing On!) and finally a 9-part, the oldest round in the collection (“Let’s Have a Peal”) which if sung by male choir only might really sound like church bells pealing.). Multicultural Songs, Games, and Dances Edited by Ruth Boshkoff and Kathy Sorensen, 1995. 30 pages. Multicultural Songs, Games and Dances is a collection of 24 multicultural folksongs from 15 countries in 15 languages. The collection initially began as a challenge for OAKE members to seek out the diversity of musical expressions within their school communities. Many of the selections are from the contributors’ background or from their encounters with musicians of other cultures or countries. Two selections are in Hungarian, which were originally collected by Zoltán Kodály and submitted by Jean Sinor. Additional languages include: Spanish, Russian, Mandan, Hebrew, Shona, Armenian, Wolof, French, Japanese, Nanticoke, Norwegian, Tagalog, English and German. A highly-esteemed list of contributors includes: Susan Taylor-Howell, Karen Arlen, Kathy Sorenson, Bryan Burton, Virginia Womack, Marilyn Sousa, Ruth Boshkoff, Donna McAleer, Miriam Factora, Ivy Rawlins Ward, and Lamar Robertson. The songs are underscored with both native characters and IPA pronunciations to make it easier for both teachers and native speakers to help students with pronunciation. All songs contain translations. There are six songs with written game instructions; five songs extended background information; three songs with dance instructions; two songs with activity suggestions; and one song with a dramatic story. Who Was Kodály - OAKE Monograph No. 1 Edited by Alan Strong 1993. Seven Articles previously published in the Kodály ENVOY. 64 pages. WHO WAS KODÁLY? is a collection of seven articles of tremendous historical significance about Zoltán Kodály, the man behind the Kodály concept. These articles represent the Kodály Envoy: 1982 to 1992 written by former Envoy editors, Kodály’s 2nd wife, a noted Hungarian ethnomusicologist, an American elementary music teacher, and an American Ph.D. Three articles bear note: “Kodály: A Twenty-Year Perspective” by Sarolta Kodály, Zoltán Kodály: His Contribution to Music Education” by Tom Kite and “Kodály In America: 1966 “ by Alan Strong, then editor of the Envoy. Strong traced the 1966 trip Kodály made to America and even includes concert programs. The 2016 OAKE Conference in Long Beach, CA marked 50 years since Kodály’s 1966 visit, which included stops at Indiana University, Interlochen, the University of California, Santa Barbara and Stanford University. American musicians honored Kodály by performing his Sonata for Solo Cello in B Minor Opus 8 (1915), one of the most significant works for solo cello written since Johann Sebastian Bach’ Cello Suites and which shows the influence Debussy and Bartók had on Kodály the composer. "Soul-Fege" A Journey from Soulful Genres to the Classics DVD DVD Format: Featuring Voices of Unity Choir and Mr. Marshall White, Dr. Eva Floyd, Mr. Henry Leck This DVD showcases the collaboration between the award-winning Voices of Unity (VOU) youth gospel choir from Ft. Wayne, Indiana and Dr. Eva Floyd from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Using Kodály-inspired pedagogical techniques, Dr. Floyd prepared VOU for participation in the Laurea Mundi International Honor Choir Festival in Budapest, Hungary. The DVD and appendix materials outline the short-term instructional unit Dr. Floyd created for the project, which focused on finding entry points for the introduction of new terms, concepts, and skills within the choir’s comfort zone (known to unknown). The experience-based instruction was sequentially planned from the starting point of reading/navigating a choral music score to being prepared to work efficiently with the honor choir conductor in Budapest. The goal of the project was to implement instruction that reflected Kodály’s vision of a good musician as articulated in his 1953 speech to students at the Liszt Academy—balanced development of students’ technique, musical understanding, ear training, and heart—throughout the teaching and learning process, ultimately making classical music accessible to singers with a strong background in soulful music. The Best of National Children's Choir (CD) Selected tracks from the OAKE National Children’s Choir, 1990-1998 The OAKE National Children’s Choir is an auditioned choir representing children from across the United States who gather together at annual OAKE National Conferences to pursue choral excellence under the direction of noted leaders in the field of choral music education.
