New National Core Music Standards Released on June 4, 2014
The National Coalition for Core Arts Standards released new voluntary music standards on June 4, replacing the previous 1994 National Music Standards. The Standards were created for all of the arts including Dance, Media Arts, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts. The standards for music were divided into 5 subcategories: Music K-8, Harmonizing Instruments, Theory and Composition, Traditional and Emerging Ensembles, and Technology.
The New Core Arts Standards are displayed in a searchable format and allow for creating a custom handbook: http://www.nationalartsstandards.org/.
The New Music Standards also appear in PDF form on the NAfME website: http://musiced.nafme.org/musicstandards/
The Standards focus on four artistic processes: Creating, Performing, Responding and Connecting. What the Standards do not provide is an outline of basic skills and knowledge for each grade level. The OAKE Repertoire and Standards Committee will be developing supplemental guides outlining Musical Skills and Content to complement the New National Music Standards.
